Free ringtones for your iPhone – using iTunes 7.x

iPhone 3G free ringtones

Apple started selling iPhone ringtones for $2 apiece through its iTunes store recently. Why pay? Get ringtones for free!

I will explain how to create free ringtones for your iPhone by using only the iTunes software and music files you already have on your PC or Mac. Please note, this works only with tracks that are not copy-protected with DRM.
If you want to create ringtones from music files that are DRM protected you need to read the guide to remove the DRM protection first (see >> Remove DRM).

This guide was tested with iPhone 2.0.x firmware and iTunes 7.7.x.

If you are using iTunes 8, please read ‘How to Create free iPhone ringtones using iTunes 8′.

Steps to create free ringtones with iTunes:

1. Make a right click on the track you wish to use as ringtone and choose ‘Get Info’

2. Select the ‘options’ tab and check the box ‘Start Time and ‘Stop time’. Then enter the time you wish the ringtone to start and stop, ie being clipped. The ringtone cannot be longer than 30 seconds.Now click ‘OK’.

3. Make another right click on the same song and choose ‘Convert Selection to AAC’. Now the track will converted to an AAC file with the start and stop time you just entered.
In case your menu does not show ‘Conver Selection to AAC’ go first to ‘iTunes -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Importing’ and select in the ‘Import Using’ menu the item ‘AAC Encoder’.

4. When the track conversion completed, open your iTunes Music folder in the Finder or Explorer, select your song, and drag+drop it to your desktop.

5. Change the file extension of the song on the desktop from .m4a to .m4r, by e.g. making a right click on your song on the desktop and select ‘Properties’. Select the name and extension section and change the extension from .m4a to .m4r. By changing the extension to .m4r the song becomes a ringtone for iPhones..

6. Now go back to iTunes and delete the clipped song from your iTunes library. The song you just copied to your desktop will not be deleted by iTunes.

7. Double click on the song (ringtone) on the desktop so that it will be added to your iTunes library under the ringtones section.

8. Now sync your iPhone with iTunes and your new ringtone is stored on the iPhone.

9. In iTunes uncheck your custom start and stop times of the original version of your track.

This article will introduce several methods of removing the DRM copy protecion from iTunes songs:

There are several ways to remove DRM (Digital Rights Management) copy protection from iTunes songs. One way is to remove the iTunes DRM with a burn-and-rip method, or using a virtual burn-and-rip program. Both methods require many steps to follow, like selecting drivers etc. and are therefore time consuming. A much more user friendly and easy method is to use an application that can remove the iTunes DRM copy protection directly.

Method 4 — Remove DRM protection from iTunes songs using iMovie on Mac OS X:

This method can be done with the iMovie software that comes along with your Mac, but it require many manual steps per file.

-> Open iMovie
-> Create a new project:

-> Select the ‘Media’ tab in the iMovie window. Now you will see a media browser in the right part of the iMovie window.

-> Choose the ‘Audio’ tab and select the playlist containing your iTunes music, or simply use the search function to select songs.

-> Select song which is DRM protect, drag the song from the media browser one the iMovie timeline that is marked with ‘Drag audio here to build your project.’

-> In order to export songs, iMovie requires a picture linked to the audio track. Just drag any kind of image to the track of song you imported in the step before.
-> After iMovie imported the image, select ‘Share..’ in the ‘Share’ sub menu.
-> Select ‘Expert Settings’ in “Compress movie for’ menu, so that you can export audio files.
-> Choose the ‘Share’ button.

-> Press ‘Sound to AIFF’ in the ‘Save as’ dialog.
-> Press ‘Save’
-> Now iMovie will export the movie project to an audio file, which will require around 30 seconds, depending on the size of the song and the speed of your PC.

The next steps will show you how to compress the large AIFF file to a much smaller AAC file:

-> Locate the AIFF file iMovie just exported and drop onto your iTunes Library
-> Right click on this song in iTunes and select ‘Convert Selection to AAC’
